An Action-Packed Day Trip to Wexford

It's easy to get caught up in the typical Wexford holiday and just lounge on one of the many beautiful beaches scattered along Sunny South East's coastline, but there is so much more to this magnificent county than you might think. From epic hikes to unknown islands, here's the best way to spend a day in County Wexford.

Go for a sunrise swim...

The Wexford coastline is covered with long sandy beaches and beautiful rock pools. No matter where you are in the county you'll always be close to a fantastic strand to catch a sunrise. I personally love hitting up the coast at the beginning of Spring for those icy cold dips and breathtaking sunrises. The sun can be beating down, but the water may be sitting at 8 degrees.

Some of the best beaches in Wexford for a sunrise swim are Rosslare Strand, Curracloe Beach, Old Bawn Bay and Soloman's Hole.

Grab breakfast or brunch...

You're going to be hungry after your ice-cold dip, so why not stop at one of Wexford's many amazing cafes for a hot coffee and a bite to eat? Wexford is covered with so many cute little cafes that serve amazing coffee and food. However, three places spring to mind! The Trough, Karoo Farmshop & Cafe and the Hungry Bear are my three favourite places for coffee and/or food in Wexford. The Trough does the best flat whites in Wexford along with delicious homemade treats. Karoo does delicious and filling breakfasts and brunches with a South African twist. The Hungry Bear serves an unusual but amazing dish of fried chicken on maple pancakes. Trust me, you have to try it when you visit!

Head to the Saltee Islands...

The Saltees are one of my favourite islands in Ireland, solely because they are temporarily home to puffins. If any of you follow my Instagram you'll know how much I love puffins! They are, without a doubt the cutest bird you will ever see. They don't always inhabit the Saltee Islands though and the best time to see them is from late April to July. If you do decide to take a trip out to the islands the best way to get there is by using Saltee Ferries in Kilmore Quay. It costs €30 for an adult ticket but it is absolutely worth the price!

Have dinner...

You'll be delighted to hear that you won't have far to travel when you disembark from the boat back in Kilmore Quay. There are some amazing restaurants that serve both great food and pints alike for you to enjoy. These include Mary Barrys, the Lobster Pot and even Kelly's in Rosslare. Each of these offers a different style of dining experience for you to enjoy.

Watch the sunset...

You may be fading at this stage but one last activity is needed to finish off your epic day in Wexford. It's time to hike up to a peak for a beautiful sunset. My two favourite places in Wexford to watch the sunset are Mount Leinster and Carrigfoyle Quarry. both are easily accessible even without hiking gear and offer a spectacular light show if caught on the right day.
