Ballinastoe Woods - A Not-so-Hidden, Hidden Gem

I call this place a “not-so-hidden hidden gem” because that’s exactly what it is. Although a lot of people know where Ballinastoe Woods is, many still struggle to find that famous Instagram photo spot. But fear not, I’m about to give you a step-by-step guide on how to reach the most picturesque point of the trail.

The Starting Point

We begin our hiking mission at the Ballinastoe Woods Car Park. From here, there are two main routes you can take. The first starts in that car park. You’ll notice a gap in the trees and the second starts from the road. Walk up the road with the Guinness Lake on your left and you should come across a split gate to your right.

The Routes

If you choose to go straight from the car park, you just need to ensure that the Guinness Lake stays on your left for the entire walk.

From the split gate route, you basically follow the same trail by constantly keeping the Guinness Lake on your left once you get into the forest.

The trails are both easily followed and continue on further than the famous Instagram spot.

Must See Spots Around the Hidden Gem

  • A viewpoint overlooking the Wicklow mountains

  • The JB Malone Memorial

  • The Guinness Lake

  • Djouce Mountain

  • Sunrise looking out at the Great Sugar Loaf

  • Keep an eye out for Snowdonia on the horizon
