Ireland is known for its lush greenery and vibrant social scene, but did you know that it's also a wild swimmer's paradise? With beautiful coastal coves and freezing-cold waterfalls that send what feels like ice daggers deep into your soul, Ireland has the perfect swim spot for any adventure seeker.
5. The Forty Foot, Co Dublin
An easy-to-access swimming hub
Location: The Forty Foot
The Forty Foot is a right of passage for every budding cold dipper and sea swimmer in the Dublin area. On a summer's day, the place is absolutely jammed. With the perfect platform to jump from a rock or stairs to slowly immerse yourself into the brisk Irish Sea, the Forty Foot attracts every level of swimmer and outdoor enthusiast.
4. Soloman's Hole, Co Wexford
A beginner cliff jumpers heaven
Location: Soloman's Hole
Soloman's Hole is one of those spots that make you realise how beautiful Ireland really is. This gully is 12 metres deep and is surrounded by a network of underwater caves, so bring your goggles and see what you can find! Located between Slade Harbour and Hook Head in County Wexford, there are plenty of options for coastal walks and cafes to choose from.
3. Portacloy, Co Mayo
North Mayo's not so hidden, hidden gem
Location: Portacloy
What used to be North Mayo's best-kept secret, is now readily available to the public. Located just off the Portacloy Cliff Walk, this beautiful little swim spot is the best way to unwind after a long hike. My top trick for finding this swimming spot is to look to your right when you come to the first fence if you're walking the cliff walk loop anti-clockwise (keeping the sea on your right). When you find it hop in and stick your head under that waterfall.
2. The Catholes, Co Laois
The coldest water in Ireland
Location: Catholes
For reasons unknown to me, the Catholes just seem to have the coldest water in Ireland. I'm not even messing, I've swum in glacial rivers in Switzerland and this waterfall in Laois of all places is colder! It's just one of those places you have to experience to believe. Pair it with a hike in the Slieve Bloom mountains and you've got yourself an amazing day out.
1. Coosacuslaun Bay, Co Cork
The most scenic old harbour in Ireland
Location: Coosacuslaun Bay
Here is one of my favourite places in Ireland. You need the perfect weather conditions to attempt a swim here, but when you get them it's truly magical. On a clear day, you can see all the way down the coast to Mizen Head, the most southerly point of mainland Ireland. Situated right below Three Castle Head, this swimming spot is the perfect place to cool down after a hike in the beautiful West Cork sun.
